$ 1 million is goal in new fund drive

President Norman Hacker man, released a statement last Monday announcing the Rice University Fund, established by tHte Rice Board of Governors as an annual source of unrestricted monies, will have as its first goal $1 million to be raised between now and June 30, 1971. The Rice Governors created the R.U.F. as a means of count( \ eracting the increasing effects of inflation and to maintain the University's 59-year history of academic excellence. In the remaining s e v e n months of the current academic year, the 1970-71 R. U. F. campaign, under the direction of Charles F. Moser, Assistant for Development to Rice President Noitman Hackerman, will attempt to gather in $1 million in unrestricted gifts' to help balanc the University's next academic year's budget. Rice faculty and staff , corporations, foundations and alumni are being solicited in the current drive. The alumni will be canvassed by National Co-Chairtmen, Dr. Maurice Ewing and Carl Illig, both Rice alumni and members of the Board of Governors. Dr. Ewing, a pioneer oceanographer, is Director of the Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory of Columbia University. Illig, retired ssociate General Counsel for Humble Oil & Refining Company, is a partner in the Houston law firm of Illig, Brill & DeWitt.
